How to connect TeamViewer via LAN

Remote work on a remote computer thanks to TeamViewer has become commonplace. If the computers have Internet access, you can easily access another device through a simple “ID – password” bundle. But is it possible to control someone else’s computer if there is only a LAN connection between them?

Is it possible to use TeamViewer without the Internet

The main data transfer channel in TeamViewer between computers is the Internet. The operation is available even with a weak connection. If there is no Internet at all, you can only access devices using the same local network. This does not even require the generation of an ID – the local IP address of the device will be used as it.

How to use TeamViewer over LAN

There are two ways to connect computers over a local network: through a direct connection and through a TeamViewer VPN. In the second case, a so-called virtual local area network is created, the essence of which is to use a common IP address.

Partner connection

You can get remote access through a real local network if there is a direct connection of devices via cable or shared Wi-Fi. To set up a LAN connection, in TeamViewer on the dependent device:

  • open the menu,
  • go to Extras – Options,
  • in the General section scroll down to Incoming LAN connections,
  • select Accept.

To connect, it is now enough to enter the IP address of the device in the “Partner ID” field.

Connecting via TeamViewer VPN allows you to create a virtual local area network. Its advantage is that the connected computer is recognized as the administrator’s device itself. This makes it easier to access files and speed up communication between PCs. To set up a VPN connection, you will need to do the following:

  • go to Options – Advanced, and click Show advanced options,
  • scroll down to Advanced network settings,
  • install VPN driver,
  • check the Use UDP box,
  • restart the program,
  • enter the partner ID and check the box “VPN”.

After connecting, a virtual network will be created, within which devices will be able to exchange data and perform any settings. At the same time, the presence of real local networks on these computers does not play a role: devices connected to such networks will not be able to access VPN.

Account connection

An account connection is not, as such, a way to create a VLAN. Logging in on two computers through one account will allow them to be linked to an account, due to which users will be able to get remote access without an “ID – password” bundle, since the connection will occur automatically. In this case, the connection is made only via the Internet.

Logging into your account is simple: you need to go to Options – General, scroll down to the Account assignment section, and click the “Link to account” button. Then enter the e-mail and password for the account. After that, all devices linked to the account will appear, to which you can connect without additional requests.
